AMAZING HEALTH BENEFITS OF TURNIP (SINGKAMAS)

The season for Singkamas or turnips is during summer, which is but a perfect timing for its thirst quenching quality during the summer heat. Turnips are a root crop vegetable that provides low calories. It is therefore the perfect substitute meal for people who want to attain a physically fit body without sacrificing the need for energy for performing strenuous activities. Thus, turnips have become a famous dietary alternative especially for today’s health conscious and body conscious generation.

Much like other fruits and vegetables, turnips is also known for its dietary fiber. Thus, it can sufficiently satisfy hunger without being heavy on the belly. In lieu of which, this vegetable helps in reducing the risk of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes.

Turnips also provide a cooling effect because it contains water. Considering that over 70% of human bodies is made up of water, eating turnips also serves as an alternative or supplement to people undergoing water therapy. The water we get from turnip helps to replace the soiled water in our bodies for cleansing which help organs like pancreas, kidney, stomach and skin to function well.

Aside from low calorie, dietary fiber and water, turnips are also an excellent source of anti-oxidants, minerals, and vitamins. It is rich in vitamin C, which is a powerful anti-oxidant that helps for the creation of collagen. Vitamin C helps the body forage damaging free radicals for the deterrence of germs, viruses, and bacteria and destructive oxidation reactions that can cause sickness, inflammation, or even cancer. Thus turnips help in boosting our body’s natural immune system. Other vitamins provided by turnips included vitamin A, and vitamin B-complex namely folates, riboflavin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid and thiamin.

Turnips also help prevents and or facilitate healing of a broad range of health issues because of its high nutrient content. Among the minerals and nutrients in turnips included calcium, phosphorous, folic acid magnesium, niacin, Iron, potassium, and sodium which are essential for the over all well being of our body.

Because of the health benefits of turnips, people around the world have invented different ways to cook turnips. In the Philippines, they are famous as an ingredient of Lumpiang Sariwa. Cooking turnips is not advisable however because heat can destroy some of its natural nutrients and minerals. Thus, the best way to eat turnips and enjoy their health benefits is through the good old fashion way of cutting the fresh vegetable into bitable pieces and enjoying its natural taste with a pinch of salt or as it is.
