She was born to actor-politician Joey Márquez and actress-politician Alma Moreno but she went on to carve a name for herself as a dancer, beauty queen and as an actress.

Reina Hispanoamericana (Hispanic American Queen) is an annual beauty pageant celebrating Hispanic heritage, language and culture, started in 1991 as Reina Sudamericana (South American Queen), is based in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. Up to 2003 the participants were restricted to the 10 countries in South America; in 2004 participants from Panama and Costa Rica in Central America were invited; and in 2006 participants from Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico & Spain joined. In 2007 Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras & United States were added, and the name changed to Reina Hispanoamericana. In 2008, Curaçao and Haiti were added. Recently, in 2017, the Philippines and Canada joined the competition for the first time. The pageant is organized by Promociones Gloria, based in Bolivia. NOVEMBER 4, 2017. MANILA, Philippines - KAREN IBASCO FROM THE PHILIPPINES WINS MISS EARTH 2017. The last time the Philippines won Miss Earth was in 2015 when the country was represented by Angelia Ong. She succeeded another Filipina beauty queen, Jamie Herrel, who won the same title in 2014.

Karen Ibasco won total of five medals in the competition - three golds and two silvers.

During the competition’s final QandA portion, Karen Ibasco was asked who or what she thinks is the biggest enemy of Mother Earth and why. Ibasco said: “I believe that the real problem in this world is not climate change. The real problem is us because of our ignorance and apathy. What we have to do is to start changing our ways, to start recalibrating our minds and redirecting our steps because together, as a global community, our micro-efforts will have a macro-effect to help save our home, our planet.”

Aside from Ibasco, the other contestants making up her so-called elemental court are Australia’s Nina Robertson as Miss Earth Air 2017, Russia’s Lada Akimova as Miss Earth Fire 2017 and Colombia’s Juliana Franco as Miss Earth Water 2017.
